I recently met with Minister Emma Hardy MP, Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State for Water and Flooding, to discuss the all too familiar challenges that flooding poses to Suffolk Coastal.
We discussed some of the key areas that are repeatedly affected, including Potters Bridge, the River Deben, and the Alde / Ore Estuary, and I am looking forward to continuing to work with her on tackling these issues.
Suffolk Coastal has long been vulnerable to the impacts of flooding. As someone who is passionate about the welfare of our communities, I’ve seen first-hand the challenges posed by our region’s low-lying coastline and its exposure to the North Sea. Rising sea levels and extreme weather events are a constant concern, and the issue of flooding remains a pressing one for our local area.
Given the growing importance of Suffolk Coastal in the UK’s energy landscape—home to Sizewell C and National Grid’s interconnectors—it’s clear that our constituency must be prioritised for flood protection work. The communities that host such critical infrastructure deserve to benefit from the investments that help safeguard their future. Flood defences are not just a precaution; they are a vital necessity to ensure our local environment and way of life are protected.
