In a significant move to address the ongoing issues faced by leaseholders across the UK, I recently joined forces with over 60 Labour MPs to take a stand against FirstPort, the UK's largest leasehold managing agent. Together, we raised our concerns regarding the excessive service charges and the consistently poor service that many residents have been subjected to.
FirstPort, which manages thousands of leasehold properties across the country, has come under increasing scrutiny as leaseholders struggle with inflated charges and a lack of responsiveness. The company’s actions have caused significant distress for many homeowners who feel they are paying excessive fees for subpar services, ranging from maintenance and repairs to communication and overall management.
Last Friday, I met with FirstPort's Managing Director to raise our concerns. We called for better transparency, so leaseholders can see where their money is going, and for improved communication between FirstPort and residents to address issues more effectively. Above all, we emphasised that property management companies must treat leaseholders fairly and be held accountable for their actions. Leaseholders shouldn’t be left in the dark or taken advantage of.
In the coming weeks, I will be following up with FirstPort to ensure that these demands are not just heard but acted upon. I will also be requesting a meeting on-site with the residents who have been most affected by the excessive charges and service failings. It’s crucial that the voices of those directly impacted are heard, and that their concerns are addressed in a meaningful way.
This is not just about holding FirstPort accountable – it's about sending a clear message to the entire property management sector that the status quo is no longer acceptable. Leaseholders deserve better, and we must work together to bring about real change.
