Recently at the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (EFRA) Select Committee, I questioned Baroness Hayman of Ullock – Environment Minister at Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) and Gareth Baynham-Hughes – Director of Animal and Plant Health, on the UK’s preparedness when it comes to biosecurity at our borders.
Protecting against animal and plant diseases requires strong inspection systems and proper resourcing.
I raised concerns about current capacity and asked what’s being done to strengthen protections at points of entry.
