Join my B1125 Rat Run Campaign

Communities along and around the B1125 are increasingly concerned about the road being used as a rat run, with vehicles diverting away from the A12 and other more suitable routes.

 

Residents have reported increasing traffic, excessive speeds and dangerous driving. There are serious concerns about what this means for the safety and wellbeing of people living along the road, as well as cyclists, pedestrians and visitors.

 

Local people should not have to fight to prove what they are experiencing every day. Although the increase in traffic is due to the construction works at Sizewell C, it is the responsibility and duty of Suffolk County Council to ensure the safety of the road, and they remain the ultimate “gatekeeper” and hold the power to decide if they want to approve new road safety or road calming measures. That said, it will be the responsibility of Sizewell C to pay for improvements and traffic calming measures if they are shown to be responsible.

 

It is therefore vital that Suffolk County Council engage meaningfully with the B1125 community, help residents and parish councils monitor traffic properly and commit to acting on the evidence gathered.

 

I am calling on Suffolk County Council and Sizewell C to:

 

Meet regularly with residents and parish councils affected by the problem.

 

Deliver (without delay) effective monitoring of traffic volumes, vehicle types and speeds at locations agreed with the community.

 

Ensure the monitoring results and methodology are shared transparently with local communities and kept under regular review.

 

Establish a clear process for adopting measures such as lower speed limits, traffic calming, signage and enforcement.
